O professor Francione argumenta que há profundas diferenças teóricas e práticas entre direitos animais e bem-estar animal. Ele critica aquilo que ele chama de “neobem-estarismo”, ou seja, a posição segundo a qual fazer melhoras incrementais no bem-estar animal acabará levando à abolição da exploração animal. Essas idéias estão apresentadas em Rain Without Thunder: The Ideology of the Animal Rights Movement (Temple University Press, 1996).
